Our issue areas
Ensuring Gender and Social Justice
SAFEPATH works with key stakeholders and women groups to raise awareness about rights based approaches to issues around education, health, hygiene, child/adolescent care needs of girls and boys, while also advancing an enabling environment for women to actively participate in local governance and other policy advocacy processes.
The organization believes that ‘power is never given to women. It needs to be claimed by women, to take charge of their own lives’. SAFEPATH promotes learning processes that encourage women to shift power imbalances responsible for structural inequities and gender-based norms that perpetrate discrimination and gender based violence in homes, workplaces and communities.
As a way to pull vulnerable children of school age exploited through child labor off the streets, SAFEPATH works to offer educational scholarships for needy and vulnerable children (especially those orphaned as a result of pastoral/communal land crisis). We work with education sector stakeholders to combat school related gender based violence in schools, unions and workplaces
SAFEPATH works with organizations and groups to enhance the leadership skills and opportunities of women using a healthy approach that encourages frank conversations and group reflections on the workings of an organization known as Transformative Leadership (TL) approach. Through this approach, stakeholders are able to interrogate SELF at the individual level where positive change in leadership starts, embody principles and values of gender equality, participation and consultation and also improve the content of their leadership as transformational leaders for women’s rights
SAFEPATH also fights to promote a world of work free from gender based violence and harassment. We work to build sustainable alliance against gender based violence in homes, schools, workplaces, unions and communities.
Enhancing Natural Resource and linked Livelihood/ Enterprise Development
With more than half of country’s population living in abject poverty and undernourishment, SAFEPATH works with families to combat climate change patterns, communal land crises and unemployment through availability of safe, adequate and nutritious food among small scale farmers.
SAFEPATH works with relevant stakeholders to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women/girls. We promote reform and policy processes that give women equal rights to economic resources as well as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services and natural resources.
The organization works with diverse groups to encourage enterprise development, build capacity in local livelihood and income generating skills (primarily agriculture), promote inclusive market systems and build the resilience of small scale farmers to address hunger and poverty in communities
For very poor families in Nigeria the only means of surviving natural disasters, communal crises and epidemics like COVID 19 is through daily or weekly saving groups usually mobilized and led by women. In times of crises, such savings becomes the primary safety net for most families’ especially in peri-urban and rural areas. Financial independence is the best way to free women from all forms of violence, and all forms of vulnerability. SAFEPATH works to promote women’s entrepreneurship through savings groups. Rainy Day savings is designed as a one year program to mitigate the gendered effect of crises, natural disasters and pandemics (e.g. COVID 19) on the lives of informal economy women by building a saving culture among them and improving their resilience to ongoing future disease/crises outbreak.
SAFEPATH approach follows a quasi Gender Action Learning methodology developed by a Canadian based grassroots feminist organization Gender at Work which is learner centered and plugged into promoting local solutions to complex life problems. This process prioritizes learning by doing .
